MRE field review Menu 12: Spicy Penne Pasta, Vegetarian 2011

MRE field review
As per the experts over at mreinfo.com I went into this, like most of my MRE taste tests, knowing the basics of what I was going to encounter.
The entree was spicy penne pasta with vegetable sausage crumbles, which I had heard good things about from some other reviewers. I knew that pasta was not my thing (not a fan of Italian sausage or most red sauces), but when I saw it for a good price at my local military surplus store, I thought, "What the hell."
I took this puppy out on my second hike, expecting a treat. (I had prepared a make-shift meal on my first hike and did not believe that it merited a review). Halfway through the back portion of my quarter mile out and back hike, I found a nice flat rock on the side of a creek and spread my towel. Not a bad little table, if I do say so myself.
One of the most fun things about this was it being my first time to play with a flameless ration heater (FRH). Those things are absolutely magical, but they also smell like...well, it made me gag a little. It's kind of...acrid. Like, definitely chemicals. I mean, I know that it is a chemical reaction that makes it work, so I shouldn't expect it to smell like food in the oven at home. But it's one thing to tell yourself that when you're reading a review and a completely different thing to tell yourself that when your nose is using bajillions of years worth of evolution to let you know that you do not need to be eating this stuff.
I don't want to give a complete rehash of everything that I say up in my photo review, so let me just rank the individual components.

Orange Carbohydrate-Electrolyte Beverage Powder: 8/10
Mango Applesauce: 5/10
Chocolate Banana Nut Muffin Top: 8/10
Wheat Snack Bread: 3/10
Peanut Butter: 7/10
Spicy Penne Pasta: 2/10

Overall: 55%, would not eat again.
